In search of my caching mojo

Surely not?

It would indeed seem so.

My caching get up and go, has got up and gone.

The effort to go in search of the mediocre just too much. Or maybe I just did far too good a job with my geocaching bucket list that everything else pales in comparison. 😉

Wrecked Fresh from a weekend away with the girls, which focused  on getting pissed fitness, but we always grab a few caches just for giggles.  This time I found myself completely uninspired by the local offerings.

The first find a black vial, shoved in the top of a fence post, behind a fuel station.

 Woo! *Rolls eyes*

We walked some more. A friend having grabbed the caches the day before, indicating we were level with the next one.

I shrugged

‘It’s just there, you don’t even need to climb.’ She’s remarkably calm with the petulant child I have suddenly become.

I walked straight past.

Yep, I walked knowingly past a cache without either the urge to find or sign it.

My friends exchanged a glance. ‘You really must be hanging tired.’

More shrugs

Back home a new cache is published.

Maybe a FTF chase is what I need? I’m nearby anyway with the dog so head on over.

Some local FTF hounds are hot on my heels, but I’m there first so in theory it’s mine right?

Wrong.

I play muggle and walk on past the cache without a care for it, taking the dog for a decent off lead run instead.

This is serious stuff.

Maybe hiding will help pique my interest once again?

Nope. Three unpublished caches to my name.

Pages ready to go. Just waiting.

A puzzle cache moved numerous times as I’ve been unhappy with the locations, the puzzle rewritten as many times and the cache now sits pitifully in my car. Mocking me.

*Sigh*

Perhaps it’s a challenge I’m needing? Something unusual to whet my appetite.

A likely candidate established, a small series consisting of a long countryside walk, each cache requiring you to find a second cache near GZ in order to find a final bonus cache.

Oh and factor in that it’s poorly maintained and one of the bonus caches is suspected missing.

Challenge accepted!

With today at my leisure the perfect opportunity to make the most of the rare sunshine and explore the countryside.

Stunning woodland paths lined with bluebells and blossom. Now this is more like it!

The first cache quickly spotted underneath a small wooden bridge. I can see it through the boards and can also see it is saturated. I leave it in situ. I’m all for signing logs but to go through the ritual with a drenched, uncared for cache…I’m not so sure.

The extra cache here has not been found for many years, wouldn’t it be cool if I was the one to find it…

As if! With zero effort exerted I’m out of there. 😉

Cache two located deeper within the woods. With a ridiculous amount of faff I find the cache. I blame Baz.😉 Honestly caching with a completely mental pup is hard work. Wherever I want to be he’s in the way, chewing caches and dragging me down slippery banks. It’s a riot. 🙄

Anyway, I Sign it and snap a photo of the bonus coords.

The next section of path is boggy, very boggy.  We navigate the bog with the very narrowest  of escapes of going A over T many times.

Then my brain catches up with me.

The coords I pictured aren’t for the overall bonus, just for the extra cache to get the bonus numbers.

Confused? Me too!

Plugging the new coords into my GPS we of course need to go back through the bog. Christ.

In fact we end up just the other side of the tree the previous cache is in. Sadisitic, twisted, cache setter.

Baz of course not getting in the way at all.

Finally after another epic search I locate what I need and have a few numbers for the bonus. Woo!

Only now we need to navigate the bog again. (Less enthusiastic) Woo.

At last the third cache, now a pro at this I’m quickly on the trail of the bonus – bonus cache. At one point this was clearly a neat custom cache, now it’s broken and more than a bit damp, but hey bonus numbers – which turn out to be illegible. Oh crap.

With a bit of a squint I can just about make out some digits and record them in a safe place. 😉

I can do no more. I have found all that is to be found.

Now for the challenge and work out the missing numbers.

My fun for the day over as the pup is shattered but at least that gives me the opportunity to apply some logic and some tech to my problem. I’ve now got two areas of interest, one more likely than the other. Yet still on par with looking for a needle in a haystack.

But did I find my mojo?

I think I might have done. I’m keen to get back out to test my theory on the final location of the bonus cache.

Sod’s bloody law however has seen that I’ve now since become booked solid with work.

So you’ll have to watch this space until I’m a free agent once again.

As for my blogging mojo, hmm that one’s a little more elusive, we better release the hounds… ‘BASIL!’….

  1. I know the feeling of being burned out. Recently I was out caching with my friend Corey. We were going up a caching trail, finding cache after cache that were pretty much identical to each other. Finally after about 20 finds, I told Corey that we had to look for different caches as I was bored with doing the same thing from cache to cache. When I look at the geocaching map, I see a lot of uninspired caches and trails in my area. In the end, we usually find a new area to explore, but it would be nice if people tried harder when placing caches.

    1. Yes you are quite right. We have quite a few new cachers in the area and they are placing quite quickly – which I understand because it’s exciting, but it would be nice to have a bit more thought put in.
That’s also why I’m being so hard on my own hides, there’s nothing wrong with any of the places I’ve chosen, just can’t help wondering if there is somewhere better. Hopefully I’ll get over myself again soon. 😉

  2. The Queen of Caching can’t give up!! There’s no wonder I’m lousy at this game – I swear it took me more than a minute to work out what I was looking at in the picture of Baz coming down a tree (I think?) Could not see where his head was for the life of me! Hope you’re back all guns blazing soon. 🙂

    1. Ha, I’ll be back up to speed soon I’m sure, just need to take a bit of time to be more selective, and then just get over myself. 😉
Yep, It’s Baz descending a tree, helpfully blocking the bit the cache was sitting in. We need to work on his caching etiquette a little…

  3. Well…. I Stand arms crossed tapping toes and look disaproovingly at you! Then my look softens as the feeling of empathy washes through me. I know your pain all to well. Have had a little wobble with both cache and blog recently too, but determined to re-find the passion for both that I had a short while ago. Hope you can find yours too, you bloody better, I nominated you for a fecking NGA you know 😉

    1. Ha ha ha! Who are you again. 😉
I think it’s time to get selective with the caches we chase for a while.
Any plans for the geolympix at all? I’m currently sat at my usual mildly curious…

      1. Well we have been less than impressed with MEGAs in general, not our sort of geocaching, but this one is so close and we know so many of the local cachers and even some of the people running it that we will probably rock up just for a nosey around. I don’t imagine it being a big caching day, I much prefer a box buried deep in the woods with no one around rather than a snake of people all passing the log book down the line. What does interest me somewhat is the Geocaching awards, so we will probably try and be there for that to see if it is likely to be something that develops into a true measure of geocaching greatness or just collective back patting for a select few. I do feel very strongly about getting bloggers recognized in it though and have cast my nomation accordingly. Longlive the GeoBlogosphere, all hail Geobloggers etc 🙂

      2. Hmm, I was dubious of the awards before but after all the grand announcements that finalists would be announced Monday and still nothing, Well I’m kind of losing faith in the system.
I’ve booked a hotel for Wales now so I’m officially committed. I know it won’t be my kind of thing BUT it’s something I’ve got to experience at least once right?

  4. It sounds a lot like doing anything with Freya, apart from her not being on a lead. Hehe. You’ll be back. You’re probably just worn out from all the fitness at the weekend 😀

    1. I was a very grumpy little sausage for the first few days home, I’m definitely getting far too old for such shenanigans.

  5. I feel your pain. Been getting a little burnt out lately myself as I trudge through the final months of my 366. As much as I’ve tried to find as many interesting/fun/pretty location caches as possible there have been too many quick easy lamp post skirt/guard rail/generally blah hides in the mix just to put an X in a box. I need a good walk in the woods, not a quick visit to a lamp pole in the middle of a nearby car park.

The more I think about it, I just need a day or two in the woods whether there’s a cache or not…

  6. You aren’t along with the need for caching and blogging mojo! I’m there with ya! At least what you show us at least has phenomenal views! Beats most out here!

I can’t wait to see where you end up hiding yours. I’m sure you will share some details! Right??? Glad you and geodog can get out and about!!!!!! 🙂
